9/11 Families Urge Mamdani to Stay Away From Ground Zero

Hundreds of 9/11 families are delivering a blunt message to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ahead of the attacks’ 25th anniversary: Stay away from Ground Zero.

A growing campaign is urging memorial organizers to prevent Mamdani from attending this year’s ceremony, with relatives arguing that his presence would be inappropriate at one of the city’s most solemn gatherings.

The effort began with Giovanni Galante, whose wife, Grace Catherine Galante, was killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to the New York Post.

More than 1,100 people have signed the petition, organizers said. That total reportedly includes approximately 300 relatives of those murdered on 9/11 and continues to rise.

The petition labels Mamdani an “unwelcome guest” and argues that his previous statements and political associations make him an unsuitable participant in the ceremony.

The push creates an extraordinary confrontation between New York’s mayor and the families whose loved ones were killed in the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil.

Mamdani will attend the memorial, despite objections to his presence.

“I will proudly honor the families, the survivors, the first responders forever impacted by that horrific terror attack by standing alongside them at this year’s 9/11 commemoration,” Mamdani said when asked about the petition.
