Angel Reese Wins WNBA Layup Contest By Making One

CHICAGO, IL — Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese won the prestigious WNBA Layup Contest after successfully making one.

Fellow players stormed the court in jubilant celebration of the historic accomplishment, as Reese became the first player in WNBA history to make a layup.

“I always knew I could do it. I just never stopped believing in myself,” said Reese. “I’ve bricked hundreds upon hundreds of layups, but I didn’t give up. I just kept chucking the ball in the general direction of the backboard, and it finally paid off. I hope this shows all the little girls at home that they should keep dreaming big dreams. No matter how many times you hurl the ball at the plexiglass and it comes back, hits you in the face, and knocks you unconscious, you just keep getting up again.”

In an effort to mirror the NBA All-Star Weekend, the WNBA adopted several skills competitions to highlight the incredible basketball prowess of its athletes. “We introduced the layup competition five years ago, but it’s always ended in a zero-zero tie,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “This year, we also added a ‘Hit The Backboard’ competition, where players attempt to at least make contact with the backboard on a shot from 10 feet away. Caitlin Clark would be able to do that, but she’s not allowed to play, obviously. She’s busy at our other skills contest, the ‘Beat Caitlin Clark With A Medieval War Hammer’ competition.”

At publishing time, the WNBA All-Star game had ended in a 6-2 blowout.
