Bill Cassidy Backs Todd Blanche for Attorney General

Todd Blanche appears headed for confirmation as attorney general after Sen. Bill Cassidy delivered the vote President Trump needed Friday.

Cassidy, R-La., made clear it was hardly an enthusiastic endorsement.

“Mr. Blanche is not perfect,” Cassidy said from the Senate floor, faulting him over the now-rescinded $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, tax protections involving Trump and what Cassidy described as political targeting by the Justice Department.

Still, Cassidy said the choice was between Blanche and another acting attorney general who might run DOJ less effectively under Trump.

“I will vote for Mr. Blanche,” he concluded.

That likely locks down Blanche’s confirmation.

With Sen. Mitch McConnell absent, Blanche had almost no margin for Republican defections. Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have already announced they will vote no, both warning that DOJ has become increasingly politicized.
