When traveling on an Amtrak train out of New York City, I saw a line of graffiti which stopped me cold.
The colorful message read, “Save the Children.”
The urban graphic display was a grim reminder to me of the more than one million babies who die annually because of a policy that treats the unborn as refuse to be discarded at will.
These children deserve to be saved. But often, it’s not a question of a mother’s choice. Rather, it is about someone else’s choice–a husband or boyfriend who wants to escape the responsibility of fatherhood.

The woman may feel intense psychological and even physical pressure to abort. In this way, she acts against her own instincts to nurture and protect.
Before we can save the children, we have to save the mother. Save her from abuse. From exploitation. From violation.
This requires concerted effort–the type of effort pregnancy resource centers engage in each day. They are on the front lines of the war against unborn babies and against women. They respond with tenderness and compassion, filling a void in the lives of many mothers. They are doing the hard work and charging women zero dollars for their many services.
Yes, let’s save the children. But let’s not overlook the mothers who are hoping against hope that we will extend a loving hand.
