Trump WNBA Joke Resurfaces Amid Cunningham Firestorm

Donald Trump joked four years ago that he could become the greatest women’s basketball coach in history by recruiting LeBron James.

As the WNBA tears itself apart over Sophie Cunningham’s defense of female sports, the punchline has found its moment.

Trump’s 2022 remarks resurfaced Tuesday night as Cunningham and the Indiana Fever prepared to face the New York Liberty amid a league-wide firestorm over transgender athletes.

“I’ll tell you what, I’d be the greatest women’s basketball coach in history,” Trump said during a July 2022 speech at the America First Policy Institute.

Trump said he preferred Michael Jordan to James but would still approach the NBA superstar with one important question.

“I’d go up to LeBron James, it doesn’t matter, I’d say, ‘LeBron, did you ever have any desire to be a woman?’” Trump said.

“Because what I’d love you to do is star on my team that I’m building up. I’ll have the greatest team in history. They’ll never lose. Nobody will come within 70 points of this team.”

Trump then turned serious.

“No, we have to change that,” he said. “We have to make it OK to talk about it.”

That last line cuts directly into the WNBA’s current controversy.

Cunningham has faced fierce criticism from coaches, columnists, and pundits after arguing that women and girls should not have to compete against biological males.

Some critics have accused her of opposing transgender people, while others have gone as far as labeling her “anti-Black.” Cunningham has rejected those characterizations and refused to retreat.

“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said July 22.

“I think I’ll always believe in that,” she continued. “I think it’s really important to protect children and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. So, I stand on what I said and I’ll always believe that.”
