U.S. — As part of ongoing efforts to empower the patient, medical website WebMD has added a convenient “Draft My Last Will And Testament” option for users researching their symptoms.
“I have an itchy red bump on my elbow. WebMD said it’s probably just a bug bite — but it could also be cancer,” commented frequent WebMD user Bridget Malingerer. “So it’s really nice they also help me draft my final will and testament. You know, just in case.”
Founded in 1998, WebMD has long been a source of consternation within the medical community. Doctors dislike it for fueling health anxiety, and patients love it for telling them their meaningless life will soon be at an end. The ability to make plans for end of life is a feature, however, that appeals to both groups.
“I used to fight with patients over their self-diagnosis, but now I just point them to the section where they can draft a will,” said Dr. Lawrence Hypo. “If you think you’re dying, great, go get your life in order. It gives me a much needed sense of peace.”
WebMD CEO Bob Medicine confirmed the ability to draw up a new will or open a trust fund is just the beginning. “Someday soon we’ll let you plan your own funeral and bury yourself,” he said proudly.
At publishing time, WebMD had introduced a new feature where a big “IT’S CANCER!” banner pops up no matter what symptom that users enter.
