U.S. — As the highly anticipated soccer matches prepared to kick off in cities throughout the country, millions of Americans got ready for the occasion by sitting down and Googling “What is a World Cup?”
With excitement for the 2026 World Cup reaching a fever pitch, U.S. citizens were eager to join in the celebration but first needed to find out what a “World Cup” actually is and what type of events it involves.
“It might be helpful to know,” said Greg Jameson, an electrician from Oklahoma. “I keep hearing people on TV talking about a ‘World Cup’ and that it’s supposed to be ‘starting this week’ and whatever, but I honestly have no idea what any of that means. Is it like an actual cup, like for drinking? A cup from another country? Is it something I’m supposed to be really excited about? I need to figure out what this is all about.”
Other Americans were just as clueless, turning to Google and Wikipedia for answers. “I guess it’s a bunch of soccer games or something?” said Lauren Perkins, a stay-at-home mother from Iowa. “Though I’m not sure people would be this excited about soccer. I read that on Wikipedia, so it may not be completely reliable. Take it with a grain of salt, I guess. But, yeah, it’s something that has to do with soccer, surprisingly. Who knew?”
At publishing time, millions of Americans attempting to watch the World Cup were reportedly Googling “What does ‘offsides’ mean in soccer?”
After a slight mixup, Steve, Timpani, and Britunni end up at the Alamo instead of the Alamo Car Rental. Protestors block their way out and Timpani is going into labor!
