LIMERICK, PA — In preparation for their Friday date night, local wife Allison Murphy informed her husband that she would be ready to go to dinner in 45 minutes, plus stoppage time.
“Forty-five minutes is my actual getting-ready time, but that can get interrupted,” Allison explained to her husband, Jake. “If I get interrupted, I’ll have to tack on some more time at the end of those 45 minutes. I call that stoppage time.”
Mrs. Murphy explained that nobody can ever know beforehand how much stoppage time will elapse. “You can’t know until the first 45 minutes are over,” she said. “At that point, I will decide how much stoppage time I will be tacking on.”
“However,” she continued, “just because I announce a certain amount of stoppage time doesn’t mean that’s the full amount of stoppage time that I will need. I may also need to add more stoppage time to account for any stoppages that occur during stoppage time.”
Perplexed, Jake asked if she could just make sure she was ready by 7:00. “Absolutely,” she stated. “I will definitely be ready by then, as long as I don’t need more time.”
At publishing time, the Murphys reported that they were 15 minutes late for dinner, as the couple had failed to leave extra time to account for hydration breaks.
