The political arm of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business, has endorsed Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner in Maine.
The move backs the former Marine and oyster farmer despite his campaign being repeatedly dogged by controversy over a chest tattoo of a Nazi SS symbol.
The endorsement was announced in late June as Mainers observed the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion policy to the states.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson criticized incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins while praising Platner.
“Mainers deserve a senator they can trust to have their backs at every turn. It is clear that is not Susan Collins,” Johnson said. “We know we can count on Graham Platner to fight for everyone to get the essential, life-saving care they need as part of a pro-reproductive rights Senate majority.”
The group contrasted Platner with Collins, whose 2018 vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court helped enable the Dobbs ruling that allowed states to protect babies from abortions.
Platner won the Democratic primary earlier this month and will face Collins in November.
His background has drawn widespread scrutiny, particularly over a skull-and-crossbones tattoo he received while serving in the Marines. The design is that of the Totenkopf symbol used by Hitler’s SS paramilitary forces, which were responsible for systematic mass murder during World War II.
Platner has said he obtained the tattoo during a night of drinking while on leave in Croatia and claimed he did not realize its Nazi associations until recently. He has since covered the tattoo with another design, stating he wanted “this thing off my body.”
Reports have contradicted his account of ignorance.
A former girlfriend described the tattoo as a “Nazi tattoo” and referred to it specifically as “my Totenkopf” in private messages sent last year — well before Platner said he learned of its meaning.
Platner has also faced questions over past social media posts containing racist and sexist content, as well as allegations from ex-partners about his personal conduct. He has apologized for some of the posts.
